Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA)
Government of India has launched Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA)-A water conservation campaign in the country from 1st July, 2019 for creating awareness among all stake holders including farmers on water conservation and rainwater harvesting. The main objective of the programme is increasing the water use efficiency in various sub-sectors of agriculture including cultivation of field crops, horticulture crops, animal husbandry and other allied subsidiary occupations.
As part of this Abhiyan, Krishi Vigyan Kendras created mass awareness among the farmers of more than 1500 blocks covered 254 districts by organized Kisan Melas on the optimum usage of water in farming with focus on increasing the water use efficiency by adopting different methods like drip irrigation for more crop per drop; conservation and harvesting of rainwater; smart irrigation scheduling; raising of drought tolerant varieties and shifting towards less water consuming crops; conservation tillage and cultural practices for water conservation and saving; composting and mulching; growing of cover crops etc.
Under this programme KVKs organized Kisan Melas including exhibitions, method demonstrations, Kisan Gosthis, Farmer-Scientist Interface, Quiz competitions on water management and soil & water testing. KVKs developed and distributed extension literature on various topics of water management besides preparing charts, posters and other forms of extension literature. They invited the public representatives, village Panchayats and its members, teachers, school children and officials of line departments for the Melas.
ATARI, Hyderabad identified 51 water stressed districts over 1500 blocks in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamilnadu and Puducherry (Union Territory) and conducted 114 Kisan Melas in these states.
