Attracting and Retaining of Youth in Agriculture(ARYA)
Project Description
Agriculture need to be made more profitable to create interest and confidence among rural youth and retain them in agriculture. Rural youth are migrating to urban areas in search of jobs and on the other hand, small holdings are on the rise which poses challenge to food security for increasing population. A comprehensive model for the development of rural youth,particularly agricultural youth, was developed by ICAR to ensure food security of the country and initiated a programme on "Attracting and Retaining of Youth in Agriculture (ARYA)".

Objectives
- To attract and empower the youth in rural areas to take up various agriculture, allied and service sector enterprises for sustainable income and gainful employment in selected districts.
- To enable the farm youth to establish network groups to take up resource and capital intensive activities like processing, value addition and marketing.
- To demonstrate functional linkage with different institutions and stakeholders for convergence of opportunities available under various schemes/program for sustainable development of youth.
The ARYA Project was implemented by ATARI Hyderabad (the then Zonal Project Directorate, Zone V) during March 2015 with three KVKs viz., Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, Nalgonda (Kampasagar) in Telangana and Nagpur in Maharashtra. During 2017-18, when the ATARIs were re-organized, KVK-Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu was added in place of KVK-Nagpur.During March 2018, the project was sanctioned to seven additional KVKs. The state wise number of KVKs implementing ARYA Project during 2019-20 are, three in Andhra Pradesh (KVK-Nellore, KVK-Kadapa (Utkur) and KVK-West Godavari (VR Gudem)), two in Telangana (KVK-Nalgonda (Kampasagar) and KVK-Warrangal (Malyal)), four in Tamil Nadu (KVK-Kanyakumari, KVK-Dharmapuri, KVK-Sivaganga and KVK-Erode) and one in Puducherry (KVK-Puducherry).

Achievements 2018-19
Seven more KVKs in the zone viz., West Godavari (V R Gudem), Kadapa, Warangal (Malyal), Dharmapuri, Shivagangai, Erode and Puducherry were added during March 2019 making the total number of ARYA KVKs to ten.KVK- Nellore established 55 enterprise units of mushroom production, vermicompost production and vegetable and fruit nurseries benefitting 115 rural youth. âSri Prakash youth nurseryâ established by a group of five rural youth in Anantavaramuvillage produced seedlings of chilli, brinjal and tomato and earned a net profit of Rs.1,58,000 in thirty days. Madhavi, a rural youth produced mushroom in Venkateswarapuram village and earned Rs.1,26,400in a year. Forty three enterprise units related to vermicomposting, bakery unit and vegetable nurseries were established in Nalgonda district benefitting 91 rural youth. Two enterprises comprising of four value added products viz., banana fibre extraction and value addition, banana dehydration and flour making, value added products from pseudostem and flower and novel bakery products from banana, tender coconut snow ball and coconut trimming, desiccated coconut, coconut jelly and confectionery products and Novel bakery products from coconut were established 50 youth under each enterprise by KVK-Kanyakumari. The members of the groups have been provided with complete knowledge and skill on processing, value addition and marketing of banana through capacity building programmes involving small scale farmers and aspiring entrepreneurs of Kanyakumari district. They were also taken on exposure visits to various existing enterprise units for motivating them and to learn the techniques of running the units successfully. KVK, Nellore organized three skill training programmes on vermicomposting, raising of fruit and vegetable nursery, construction of shade nets and portray nursery technology and mushroom production benefitting 361 rural youth. KVK Nalgonda organized four skill training programmes related to bakery, IFS, vermicomposting and vegetable nursery production under shadenet involving 125 rural youth of the district. KVK-Kanyakuamri conducted five skill training programmes on value addition to banana fibre, banana fibre extraction and value addition to banana pseudostem, flower and value addition to coconut benefitting 77 rural youth.

Achievements 2017-18
KVK, Nellore established 60 enterprise units of mushroom production, vermicompost production and production of vegetable and fruit nurseries benefitting 203 rural youth. âSri Gayatri nurseryâ established by a group of six rural youth in Kalikivay village of the district produced seedlings of acid lime and sweet orange and earned a net profit of Rs.2,53,000 in six months. Two groups of youth established mushroom production units in Purandarapuram village that produced milky and oyster mushrooms earned Rs.35000 in a year. Eighteen enterprise units of vermicomposting, IFSand vegetable nurseries were established in Nalgonda district benefitting 23 rural youth. Four commodity groups for banana fibre extraction and value addition, banana dehydration and flour making, value added products from pseudostem and flower and novel bakery products from banana with 25 farmers each and Four commodity groups on desiccated coconut, coconut jelly and confectionery, tender coconut and novel bakery products from coconutwere formed with 25 members in each groupwere formed by KVK Kanyakumari and necessary trainings were imparted with hands on training and exposure visits.Pulveriser, cabinet tray dryer, tender coconut snow ball making machine, coconut trimming machine were installed and FSSAI licensing obtained for the incubation centre at KVK campus.
KVK, Nellore organized four skill training programmes on vermicomposting, raising of fruit and vegetable nursery, construction of shade nets and portray nursery technology and mushroom production benefitting 344 rural youth. KVK-Nalgonda organized four skill training programmes on bakery, IFS, vermicomposting and vegetable nursery production under shade net involving 123 rural youth. KVK, Kanyakuamri conducted three skill training programmes on value addition to banana fibre, banana fibre extraction and value addition to banana pseudostem and flower benefitting 27 rural youth.

Achievements 2016-17
KVKs trained rural youth on various enterprises like mushroom production, vermicomposting and nurseries and assisted groups of youth in establishing and operating commercial enterprises in their villages. In Andhra Pradesh, KVK, Nellore established 33 enterprise units for mushroom production, vermicomposting and fruit and vegetable nurseries in villages involving 112 rural youth. In Telangana, KVK, Nalgonda (Kampasagar) established 30 enterprise units of IFS, bakery, vegetable nurseries and vermicomposting in rural areas benefitting 122 youth. Skill trainings were imparted to 1250 rural youth. Functional demonstration units were established in KVK premises to give hands on trainings. Critical inputs, both capital and recurring were provided to rural youth (individual or group). Market linkages were established for effective and timely marketing of the produce from the enterprise units.
